Critical Essay
"The Pardoner: A Castrato, A Critical Essay of Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales" is published in this year's The Sigma Tau Delta Review: Journal of Critical Writing and is available to view!
This is a research paper that I wrote based on my own unique hypothesis concerning the sexuality of the Pardoner, a character from Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales. My hypothesis states that not only is the Pardoner a eunuch, he is a castrato for the Catholic Church. In fact, after research into the use of castrati in the Catholic Church, and a close examination of Chaucer's character, the likelihood of the Pardoner joining the ranks of a secret society within the Church appears highly likely. This theory is supported not only by character description, but also by interaction with other characters. I used research to find both biological and historical evidence to support my claim.
